Where in the World Can you Find Volvo’s Sunken Treasure Chest?

Sunday, April 5th, 2009
Jenny Mclane asked:

Last year, we all had to find out where Volvo buried the pirate-themed Volvo XC90. This time around, as part of their tie-in with the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End movie, Volvo is hiding a treasure chest. And it is not going to get buried. It is going to get submerged somewhere deep in the ocean.

This new Volvo treasure chest comes with gold doubloons which amount to $50,000. And it also includes the key to another new Volvo XC90. And if you are the lucky one to find that treasure chest, you get to keep the gold and the vehicle. Or you may be lucky enough to find a sunken vehicle that still has perhaps some Superchips functioning.

To be able to take home the treasure, you must go through various challenges like solving online puzzles and games. You must be at least 18 years old to join this one though. If you are residents of the United States, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, then you sure can be part of Volvo’s The Hunt.

Linda Gangeri is the national advertising manager of Volvo Cars’ North American arm. She expresses, “Okay, okay. Maybe it is a stretch to call The Hunt one of the greatest mysteries of the deep, but it certainly has got a lot of people flummoxed. We thought some of our more prodigious participants might enjoy pitting their wit and skill against some age-old mysteries… but even if they solve them, the only way to get your hands on Volvo’s treasure is by joining our Hunt!”

Volvo also does continue to discuss that once you are part of The Hunt, you may also be able to get to learn more about the greatest mysteries that the deep waters have kept secret for long. This includes the mysterious giant squids and eels at Suruga Bay in Japan, the ghost ship Mary Celeste, the secrets behind the Bermuda Triangle, and the power of sirens’ and mermaids’ voices.

Where in the World is Volvo’s Treasure Chest?

Somewhere on the ocean floor lays a treasure chest full of $50,000 worth in pirate gold and a key to a all-new Volvo XC90. And enthusiasts around the world are finding ways to search for the sunken treasure…

The Volvo Car Corporation is calling all pirates, scallywags and treasure fanatics to join The Hunt – a competition in connection with the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which opens in theatres on May 25.

The Hunt, which has started on the 4th of this month, is the second in Volvo’s partnership with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. This will also be the first time the competition has been open to Canadians. Last year’s program was limited to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Spain and Austria. Now, the competition includes Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan and Thailand.

Where in the world did the Swedish automaker hide its treasure? Well, that is for participants to find out… The mystery thrills everyone… And it puffs out fumes of eagerness like the Volvo muffler. And the increasing breathtaking sensation makes the competition more intense. Tens of thousands of online treasure hunters across the globe vie to find a chest. To inspire, entertain, or even distract all would-be pirates on their quest for the treasure, Volvo offers up some other great watery mysteries from over the ages.

“Okay, okay. Maybe it is a stretch to call The Hunt one of the greatest mysteries of the deep, but it certainly has got a lot of people flummoxed,” said Linda Gangeri, the national advertising manager for Volvo Cars of North America. “We thought some of our more prodigious participants might enjoy pitting their wit and skill against some age-old mysteries… but even if they solve them, the only way to get your hands on Volvo’s treasure is by joining our Hunt!”

Just days after Volvo launched its latest treasure hunt, the company has revealed some spots where it did not sink the treasure. “Three-quarters of the earth’s surface is under water, so finding a sunken treasure chest is not going to be easy,” said Volvo’s Linda Gangeri. “We want our hunt to be challenging, but we don’t want participants to become discouraged, so we thought we’d help narrow the playing field by revealing places where ‘X’ doesn’t mark the spot.”

Some of the more rational sounding places where the treasures are not found include the Dead Sea, the Red Sea, the Caspian Sea, and Sea World. Even though the hunt started on 4 May, there is still time to join. Volvo is calling more participants aged 18 years and older to visit a Volvo retailer to pick up a special pirate chart then register at www.volvocars.com/thehunt any time between May 4 and May 29. The first person from each of the participating markets to finish the online hunt will compete against one another in one final online challenge June 2. To participate in the global head to head, players will be required to present an original pirate chart upon conclusion of The Hunt. Winners will only be eligible if they can produce the pirate chart.

Once registered, participants set sail on a virtual high seas adventure and receive clues as they solve a series of challenging and fun online puzzles. Enthusiasts can join The Hunt and can catch up with other participants if they correctly answer the puzzles posted online. As the contest progresses, the puzzles will become more and more hard to solve.

The first of those 22 individuals to solve the final puzzle will be named the winner and will receive a trip to the burial location to retrieve the chest filled with $50,000 in pirate gold and a key to a brand new Volvo XC90.

“Last summer, we held a treasure hunt to find a buried Volvo XC90 V8 to tie in with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and were blown away by the success – more than 100,000 participants from around the world joined in,” said Linda Gangeri, national advertising manager for Volvo Cars of North America. “This year, with more countries, more booty and all the early interest, we’re really excited to set sail.’ So, come join The Hunt!”

Volvo’s Treasure Chest Sleeps With the Fishes

In an interesting pace of events, it seems like the ultimate pirate to win Volvo Cars Corp.’s treasure. The Swedish automaker upped anchor, at least momentarily, on the last vital leg of its online treasure hunt. The Hunt will not be unearthing the $50,000 treasure anytime soon because Odyssey Marine Exploration, Volvo’s partner, has happened upon an actual million treasure instead. The retrieval of the treasure will hang in the balance until tumult dies down over the discovery of real life treasure by Odyssey.

Volvo’s treasure chest full of $50,000 worth gold doubloons and a key to a new Volvo XC90 is located in a secretive area called the ‘Black Swan’ somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. But reports are claiming that a Spanish coastal town court of La Linea has “issued an order for the Spanish Guardia Civil to detain any Odyssey vessel should it leave the port of Gibraltar,” which has brought about an abrupt stop to the Swedish automaker’s retrieval plans.

Earlier this year, the automaker picked Odyssey to sink a treasure chest to create a bona fide, thrilling treasure hunt to promote Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.’ Disguised in secrecy, Odyssey scouted locations in the Western Mediterranean and zeroed in on a perfect spot off the coast of Gibraltar.

“We thought sinking a real treasure chest, filled with $50,000 in gold doubloons and a key to a new Volvo, and creating a global treasure hunt for 22 markets was challenging,” said Linda Gangeri, the national advertising manager, Volvo Cars of North America. “But that was, quite literally, a drop in the ocean compared to the storm our attempted retrieval process has stirred up.”

While thousands of hunters from around the globe struggled to find the treasure booty, Odyssey struck gold and silver of their own in the Atlantic Ocean with the discovery of an estimated $500 million in coins from the Black Swan. When the discovery was made public, queries started pouring in as to the real origin of the ‘Black Swan.’ Was it Spanish wreckage or something else? For security reasons, Odysey refused to reveal the exact location of the Black Swan. Hence, it found itself in the middle of a media storm.

“When we discovered the ‘Black Swan,’ international interest in the find was amazing,” said Greg Stemm, a real-life shipwreck explorer and the co-founder of Odyssey. “Even though we have been very clear that it’s in the Atlantic Ocean, outside any country’s territorial waters, when Spanish authorities saw that we’d been out near Gibraltar in March, some unfortunately jumped to the wrong conclusion. Until very recently, we were contractually bound not to reveal our arrangement with Volvo, so without a real explanation of why we had deep-sea exploration equipment out there, it’s easy to see how imaginations could run wild.”

The winner, 23-year-old Alena Zvereva from Ekaterinburg, Russia, will receive $50,000 and a new Volvo XC70. Volvo, however, is not giving up on its retrieval plans yet and is committed to exploring every possibility to salvage the treasure from its watery depths.

“We wanted an adventure, and we certainly got one,” said Gangeri. “Real-life shipwreck exploration is uncharted waters for us, and Odyssey did warn us that you never know what will happen out on the high seas. They have been an excellent partner throughout all this, and they helped make this contest one of the most authentic, exciting promotions of the year. Now, pirate story or not, we’re putting everything we have toward raising a thrilling–and happy–ending.” Controversies move swiftly as the Volvo wiper blade and it makes everyone so keyed up.

11,000 Pirates Go Overboard to Find Volvo’s Sunken Treasure

Just two weeks remain for pirates and treasure hunters to find Volvo’s sunken treasure lying at the oceans’ bosom. The Volvo Car Corporation’s The Hunt is giving away a treasure chest full of gold doubloons and a key to a brand new Volvo XC90.

The new-generation global treasure hunting made famous by the Swedish automaker has lured more than 11,000 pirates and treasure hunters. Over the past two weeks, ‘pirates’ in Volvo’s online search have ‘visited’ Cuba, the Cape of Good Hope, Ceylon, Singapore and nine other global hot spots. Individuals nationwide have less than two weeks to join The Hunt. The latter is part of the automaker’s promotional tie-in with Disney’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. The movie opens in U.S. theaters May 25.

“There’s still time to join the 11,000 people already navigating their way through The Hunt,” said Linda Gangeri, the national advertising manager for Volvo Cars of North America. “Clever pirates can catch up with The Hunt and test their online game skills right up until the puzzles close May 29. There might even be some helpful hints floating around the Internet for ambitious newcomers.”

To join The Hunt, participants 18 years old and older must visit a Volvo retailer to pick up a special pirate chart then register at the company’s Web site any time between now and May 29. Winners will only be eligible if they can produce the original pirate chart upon conclusion of The Hunt. Once registered online, pirates could set sail on a virtual high seas adventure, sojourning exotic locations around the world and collecting clues that point to the treasure chest’s location. The participants have to solve a series of challenging and cool online puzzles to get the elusive treasure.

As the online search progresses, the puzzles will become increasingly difficult to solve. On the second day of June, the first person from each of the 22 participating markets to finish the online hunt will compete against one another in one final exciting online challenge. The first of those 22 individuals to solve the final puzzle will be named the winner and will be given a trip to the burial location to retrieve the chest filled with Volvo’s treasure.

In addition to the United States, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom also are taking part in The Hunt.

Earlier, the Swedish automaker has given ten spots where it did not sink its treasure. The spots include the Dead Sea, Red Sea, Sea of Love, Sea of Tranquility, Caspian Sea, Treasure Island, Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis, Sea World and Watergate.

“Three-quarters of the earth’s surface is under water, so finding a sunken treasure chest is not going to be easy,” said Linda Gangeri, the national advertising manager for Volvo Cars of North America. “We want our hunt to be challenging, but we don’t want participants to become discouraged, so we thought we’d help narrow the playing field by revealing ten places where ‘X’ doesn’t mark the spot.”

“Okay, okay. Maybe it is a stretch to call The Hunt one of the greatest mysteries of the deep, but it certainly has got a lot of people flummoxed,” added Gangeri. “We thought some of our more prodigious participants might enjoy pitting their wit and skill against some age-old mysteries… but even if they solve them, the only way to get your hands on Volvo’s treasure is by joining our Hunt!”

The thrill of finding Volvo’s treasure chest is dramatically building up. And like Volvo pressure plates, the thrill is pressing harder and harder to intensify the escapade a bit farther. Who is going to be the lucky XC90 owner? We all will find out soon…

Volvo Discloses 10 Spots Where it Didn’t Sink Its Treasure

Glady Reign asked:

The thrill of finding Volvo’s treasure chest is increasingly building up. To intensify the escapade a bit further, Volvo Cars is leaking vital hints to aid treasure hunters. The Swedish automaker has already disclosed ten spots where it did not sink the treasure.

The treasure chest contains $50,000 in gold doubloons and a key to a brand new XC90 that would come equipped with cutting edge Volvo OEM parts. Volvo has been calling all pirates, scallywags and treasure fanatics to join The Hunt – a part of the automaker’s promotion with Disney’s new film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End which opens in theatres on May 25. On May 4th, tens of thousands of would-be pirates joined The Hunt and set sail on a virtual high seas quest, solving a chain of online clues and puzzles that will eventually lead to the treasure chest.

The automaker’s disclosed hints include:

1. The Dead Sea. Volvo wanted to sink its treasure, not float it.

2. The Red Sea. The Swedish automaker’s colors are blue.

3. The Sea of Love. While the automaker truly admires the treasure hunt participants, this sentiment may be a little strong. Besides, it’s a song.

4. The Sea of Tranquility. Volvo wanted to make the hunt accessible to everyone, not just astronauts landing on the moon.

5. The Caspian Sea. It may be the world’s mightiest lake, but it’s no challenge for the sea-faring pirates. The automaker wanted to deliver a real high-seas adventure.

6. Off the Shores of Skeleton Island (a.k.a. Treasure Island). Way too obvious – Volvo learned from last year’s Hunt that they have to keep the treasure hunters on their toes.

7. Bermuda Triangle. The automaker wanted to make sure the treasure was difficult to find, not impossible.

8. Atlantis. It was a hot favorite, but the company couldn’t find it.

9. Sea World. Volvo already has enough sharks going after its treasure.

10. Watergate. Enough people went under.

There is still time to join The Hunt! Somewhere on the ocean floor lays a treasure chest full of pirate gold and a key to a new Volvo. And it is eagerly waiting to be discovered…
